How the Come Sports prediction engine works

The Come Sports cricket prediction engine combines historical data, current form, and contextual factors to generate match win probabilities and fantasy captain recommendations. The engine processes data from over 5,000 T20 matches and updates its models after every match. The model architecture combines gradient-boosted decision trees with neural network layers, with the output being calibrated against historical outcomes to produce accurate probabilities.

The engine considers 47 variables for each prediction: team form (last 5 matches weighted exponentially), player form (last 5 matches for top 8 players), head-to-head records (last 10 meetings), venue history (last 30 matches at the venue), weather conditions (temperature, humidity, dew probability), pitch report (curator’s assessment, average first-innings score), and captain/vice-captain history (recent selections and outcomes).

The prediction output is a match win probability (e.g., 65% for team A, 35% for team B), a recommended captain pick, and a recommended vice-captain. The Come Sports app shows all three outputs in the match page, with the captain pick ranked by expected value. The expected value calculation accounts for both the captain pick’s expected points and the contrarian value (how different the pick is from the crowd).

The engine is calibrated against historical data, with the calibration validated on a holdout set of 500+ matches from the past 2 years. The calibration accuracy is within 5-7% for most match states, with the accuracy highest in the middle overs (when the match state is most informative about the final outcome) and lowest in the powerplay and death overs (where individual moments have more variance).

Captain pick predictions for today's match

The captain pick prediction is the single most useful output of the prediction engine, because the 2x captain multiplier amplifies the entire performance of one player. A captain who scores 80 runs gives you 160 points; a captain who scores 30 gives you 60. The same player, same match, different captain pick, different outcome by 100 points.

For high-stakes matches (playoffs, finals, marquee clashes), the engine typically recommends a safer captain pick with a 60-70% confidence level. The safe captain pick is the choice for head-to-head contests and small group contests, where the win rate matters more than the upside. The safe pick has an expected value of 12-18 points for high-stakes matches, depending on the team form and venue.

For regular matches, the engine may recommend a contrarian pick with a 50-60% confidence level. The contrarian pick is the choice for mega contests, where the upside matters more than the win rate. A contrarian pick with 50% confidence and 20-point expected difference has an expected value of 10 points, but the rank improvement from being contrarian can be 10-50 ranks in a 50,000-entry mega contest.

The prediction is updated every 6 hours on match day, with the final prediction locked 30 minutes before toss. The lock gives the fantasy player 30 minutes to react to any last-minute team news — late changes to the playing XI, last-minute injury updates, or toss decisions. The Come Sports app pushes a notification at the lock time with the final captain pick, allowing the fantasy player to confirm or adjust their team selection before the matches start.

Win probability modelling

The win probability model uses a combination of run rate differential, wickets in hand, and overs remaining to estimate the probability of each team winning at any point in the match. The model is calibrated against historical outcomes and produces accurate probabilities for most match states.

The model is most accurate in the middle overs (6-15), where the match state is most informative about the final outcome. The model accuracy in the middle overs is 5-7% off the true probability. The model is less accurate in the powerplay (first 6 overs) and the death overs (last 5 overs), where individual moments have more variance.

The win probability is the input for the in-match fantasy decision: do you need to take more risk on your captain pick, or do you need to play safe? A team with 75% win probability has a different captain pick strategy than a team with 55% win probability. The Come Sports app shows the live win probability in the captain pick screen, allowing the fantasy player to adjust their captain pick based on the in-match dynamics.

Pre-match prediction workflow

The pre-match prediction workflow is: (1) check the prediction engine output 24 hours before the match, (2) check the team news and pitch report 6 hours before the match, (3) check the AI captain suggestion 1 hour before the match, (4) make your final picks 30 minutes before the lock-in deadline. The workflow takes 5-10 minutes total, and the workflow is the right discipline for every match.

The Come Sports app guides you through the workflow with push notifications: 24 hours before the match, you get a notification with the predicted win probability and the recommended captain pick. 6 hours before, you get an update with the latest team news. 1 hour before, you get a final update with the locked-in captain pick recommendation. The Come Sports AI captain pick engine is transparent about its inputs and outputs. The app’s captain pick screen shows the top 5 candidate captain picks with the expected points for each, the captain pick accuracy history, and the contrarian value (how different the pick is from the crowd).

The transparency extends to the AI model’s confidence level. A high-confidence pick (70%+) is shown with a green badge, a medium-confidence pick (50-70%) is shown with a yellow badge, and a low-confidence pick (<50%) is shown with a red badge. The confidence badge is the input for the captain pick decision, and the decision should weight high-confidence picks more heavily than low-confidence picks.

The AI engine is also transparent about its limitations. The app shows the captain pick accuracy for the current tournament, broken down by venue, opposition, and player role.
